We’re seeking a Staff Data Scientist to drive transformative solutions for our business’s most critical operational challenges. This high-impact, high-visibility role is a unique opportunity to join the CEO’s Strategy and Operations team, collaborating directly with the CEO. You’ll be at the forefront of shaping how we capture, analyze, and leverage data to optimize operations, drive innovation, and achieve ambitious company-wide goals.

In this role, you’ll move beyond traditional data analysis to architect operational systems and processes to produce actionable data. By leveraging advanced algorithms and building scalable data pipelines, you’ll enable automation, optimization and transformative insights across the organization.

The Impact You’ll Have:
  • Build and deploy advanced models and algorithms to anticipate trends, address operational challenges, identify risks, and uncover opportunities.
  • Analyze large-scale payment processing data to uncover insights that improve financial outcomes, inform product development, and guide strategic decision-making.
  • Strong understanding of the strategic value of data and its ability to drive business decisions through actionable insights. Expertise in the full data ecosystem, including data management, governance, quality standards, accessibility, and scalability, ensuring data is not only reliable but also accessible and optimized for business needs.
  • Work directly with the CEO and Strategy & Operations team to tackle the company’s most critical operational challenges.
  • Translate complex data insights into clear, actionable recommendations that shape business strategy and drive organizational impact, and communicate findings to C-Suite executives to ensure alignment.
Who You Are: Technical Expertise:
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Julia with a solid understanding of their syntax, data structures, and object-oriented programming.
  • Strong SQL skills and working knowledge of designing and implementing ETL pipelines using orchestration tools
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, AWS) for large-scale data processing and storage, including tools such as Redshift, S3, BigQuery, and Dataflow
  • Solid understanding of statistical methods, machine learning models, and optimization techniques.
  • Expertise in machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, PyMC3) for building, training, and deploying models at scale. 
  • Proven experience in developing cloud-native ML solutions, optimizing workflows, and deploying models into production environments.
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex datasets, uncover trends to solve operational challenges, and drive measurable business impact.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing dashboards, scaled analyses, or automated solutions that succinctly answer complex or ambiguous business questions.
  • Proactive and strategic problem solver who anticipates issues, thinks ahead, and delivers impactful results.
  • Thrives in dynamic, collaborative environments, effectively working across teams to align goals and achieve objectives.
  • Strong communicator with the ability to translate technical insights into actionable recommendations for diverse audiences, including executive leadership.
Experience & Education:
  • 6+ years of experience in data science, data engineering, or a related field.
  • Master’s or Advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience in a high-growth, fast-paced environment (fintech or a similar industry preferred)

Compensation and Benefits

Marqeta is a Flex First company which allows you to choose your best working environment, whether that be from home or at a company office. To support Flex First, we calibrate pay to a competitive value according to working location. Compensation is aligned according to three tiers within the United States:

  • National: A baseline tier that applies to most of the geographic territory of the United States.
  • Premium: Slightly elevated from the National tier, and oriented toward a narrower set of higher cost-of-living areas, such as Los Angeles CA and Seattle WA
  • Premium Plus: A tier for the most expensive working areas, like the San Francisco Bay area and New York City.

When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this position is:

  • National: $159,800 - $ 199,800
  • Premium: $171,000 - $ 213,700
  • Premium Plus: $185,800 - $232,300
