Senior Data Engineer

Work from home Full-time role Hiring

Hello, we are AMBOSS and we are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our team!

About AMBOSS

AMBOSS is a learning and clinical decision support tool striving to empower physicians across the globe to provide the best possible care. Our founders set out in 2011 to create a tool that they would have hoped to have as medical students and doctors. Since then we have grown to currently operate in 180 countries and have gained immense traction in Germany and the US. Currently, we are pursuing this mission with more than 500+ employees in our offices in Berlin, Cologne, New York, and Cagliari.

Why Data & Analytics at AMBOSS?

Join a high-trust, cross-functional team where data is the backbone of every product decision, experiment, and growth initiative. Working side-by-side with Product, Engineering, Commercial, and Medical teams, you’ll help turn a modern, cloud-native stack—BigQuery, dbt, Looker, Airflow, Python, Mixpanel—into actionable insights and scalable platforms. Your work will directly advance our mission to enable doctors to provide the best possible care.

The Role

As Senior Data Engineer, you will be a hands-on technical lead within our data engineering team, owning critical parts of our data platform and contributing to architectural decisions. This role is designed with a clear growth path: you will have the opportunity to take on increasing levels of responsibility over time—potentially including leadership and roadmap ownership—as you grow within the role.

What You’ll DoIn your first 6–12 months:
  • Drive development of core platform components (pipelines, dbt models, data contracts, observability, CI/CD).

  • Collaborate with Analytics and Product Engineering to deliver reliable, self-service data infrastructure.

  • Contribute to architectural decisions for warehouse evolution, data governance, and real-time data needs.

  • Define and enforce engineering standards for code quality, testing, and reliability.

  • Act as technical mentor to other engineers; support team planning and reviews.

  • Begin shaping the data-platform roadmap in collaboration with the Head of Data.

After 6–12 months:
  • Opportunity to explore increased responsibilities, potentially including leadership tasks, roadmap ownership, and cross-functional coordination.

  • Support broader platform initiatives that contribute to long-term scalability, reliability, and alignment with product and business needs.

What You Bring
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering or platform roles.

  • Deep SQL and Python skills; strong experience with dbt and orchestration tools like Airflow.

  • Hands-on experience with cloud warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake) and cloud infrastructure (GCP or AWS).

  • Experience with CI/CD (e.g. GitHub Actions) and Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform).

  • A solid grasp of data modeling, observability, and governance principles.

  • Strong communication skills and stakeholder alignment experience in cross-functional teams.

  • Motivation and potential to grow into technical leadership and platform ownership.

Bonus Points
  • Exposure to AI/ML data pipelines, vector databases, or real-time streaming.

  • Experience contributing to or leading platform-wide initiatives.

  • Familiarity with analytics tools (Looker, Mixpanel) and experimentation frameworks.
