The teacher will identify and implement best practices in instruction and student achievement. The teacher will motivate each student to acquire knowledge in scientific facts and principles, skills in scientific methods of problem solving, and to discover and develop special talents of students in scientific fields. The teacher will create an engaging, welcoming and positive classroom environment which stimulates achievement and growth.DISTRICT OVERVIEW: Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 14,100 students pre-K – post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $164 million, with a state funding of $8,700 per pupil.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Superintendent in exercising the prerogative to determine appropriate qualifications.
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the area of general science or biology, and ELA preferred
  • Valid Secondary Michigan Teaching Certificate - DX/DI/DA (Science) & BA (ELA) preferred
  • A major in the subject area is strongly preferred

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create a welcoming and positive classroom climate and culture.
  • Exhibit a commitment to the District’s Shared Vision and Collective Commitments.
  • Teach skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general and integrated science to secondary students, utilizing curriculum based on MDE guidelines, state curriculum, and adopted by the Board of Education.
  • Develop a balanced science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and experiments; organize laboratory activities for optimal learning.
  • Demonstrate scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aides.
  • Adapt science materials and methods to develop engaging, relevant, sequential lessons and assignments that guide and challenge students.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Integrate school improvement goals into the classroom.
  • Maintain student classroom records using current district technology.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss curriculum, assessments, and student progress.
  • Instruct students in the proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment and plant and animal life.
  • Provide for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment, and tools. Make minor adjustments and requests for repairs to equipment as required.
  • Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide a safe and productive classroom environment.
  • Identify student needs and work collaboratively with other professional staff members in assessing and assisting students.
  • Communicate with students, parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Supervise students to ensure a school climate in accordance with the District Vision and Collective Commitments.
  • Administer and monitor student assessments.
  • Participate in school improvement/AdvancEd accreditation initiatives at the district and school level, committees, and professional learning communities.
  • Execute other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by building or department administrator.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association.
