Job title: Multimedia Specialist II (Part-Time) in Tucson, AZ at University of Arizona Company: University of Arizona Job description: Multimedia Specialist II (Part-Time) Posting Number req22826 Department Arizona Geological Survey Department Website Link Location Main Campus Address Tucson, AZ USA Position HighlightsThe primary purpose of this position is to support the Polar Explorer project (a collaborative project between Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University, and the University of Arizona) through the creation of two seasons (approximately five episodes per season) of the Life in the Greenhouse podcast - an existing podcast series produced by the Carbon Accounting, Reporting, and Management Lab (CARML). One of the seasons will focus on climate change in the Arctic, and the regional and global impacts of Arctic Amplification on permafrost and Arctic landscapes. The other season will be about climate change mitigation solutions, including geologic carbon sequestration technologies. Both sessions will be created and produced as part of the Polar Explorer project.The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs. For more information about working at the University of Arizona and relocations services, please . Duties & ResponsibilitiesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Familiarization with the project, background research, and project goals. Work both independently and collaboratively with project team leaders to understand the scientific content central to each podcast series. This includes conducting any background research necessary to host and produce both podcast seasons. Work independently and with project supervisors to draft an outline and story arc for each of the two podcast seasons.
  • Conduct interviews: Contact and schedule interviews with members of the project team and external researchers and knowledge holders. Research each interviewee’s work and prepare questions. Conduct and record interviews, in person when possible.
  • Write and record host audio: Write host narrations that: connect and explain interviewee audio, provide explanatory analogies, and give the audience context. Record host narrations.
  • Edit episodes: Assemble clips from interviews, host narrations, audio effects (such as environmental sounds), and music into well-crafted podcast episodes using Descript software. Edit audio settings to produce episodes with high-quality, uniformly leveled audio.
  • Publish and distribute podcast episodes: Create new cover art for each season that is visually similar to other Life in the Greenhouse cover art. Write episode descriptions and episode notes. Use Spotify for Creators as the host platform. Ensure all episodes and associated descriptions and cover art are also available on all major podcast platforms (including Apple and Amazon/Audible) by maintaining accounts with those other platforms.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of global climate change (its causes, scientific evidence, mitigation methods).
  • Knowledge of science communication best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical scientific information to a lay audience.
  • Ability to use in-person and remote audio recording equipment and software.
  • Ability to think creatively.
  • Ability to find the story in scientific research and engagingly tell a story.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in climate science and/or solutions, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. degree in climate science and/or solutions.
  • Master’s certificate in science communication.
  • Experience and training in the basics of storytelling/narrative.
  • Training and/or experience in telling stories in different mediums, including audio, photography, and digital filmmaking.
  • Demonstrated experience scripting, hosting, and creating podcast episodes and series similar to Life in the Greenhouse.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Descript software.
  • Demonstrated experience publishing and distributing podcast episodes.
  • Demonstrated experience conceptualizing, researching, writing and editing professional-quality communication products.
