Chairperson/Assistant Professor of Mass Communications

Wiley University is seeking a Chairperson/Assistant Professor of Mass Communication. The Chairperson/Assistant Professor of Mass Communication will teach courses as required by the teaching discipline, engage in scholarly activities including research; develop attractive, collaborative, interdisciplinary, provide student advisement; program assessments; synchronized courses to promote student performance and retention; and to keep abreast of current advances in both research and pedagogy, choosing appropriate textbooks, preparing lectures, and grading. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITES: • Leads and coordinates the academic activities of the faculty and students within that discipline. • Maintains and promulgates the departmental major and minor degree plans approved by the Academic Council, in consultation with the faculty in the department and closely related departments. • Assures that when changes to the curriculum or degree plan are warranted, that the professors are working with the dean, who will, in turn, proposes such changes for consideration by the Academic Council. • Assists the division’s dean and the vice president for academic affairs in timely preparation (at least 20 weeks prior to each semester or summer term) of class schedules, classroom assignments, and course materials. • Models and ensures that each faculty in the department participates fully in the implementation of the student advisement and student support and intervention programs. • Fulfills the University mission of providing a quality education for all students attending Wiley University. • Teaches and assists in developing undergraduate courses and may conduct cognate laboratory training. • Prepares updated course syllabi and provides each student with a written statement of course requirements at the beginning of the semester including texts, course content, competencies and evaluation. • Prepares course materials and performs other activities which are related to and meet the requirements of the course each semester. • Conducts evaluations of students’ performance and assigns grades on the basis of such evaluations. • Collaborates with lead professors and faculty of the division to develop collaborative, interdisciplinary and synchronized courses to improve retention of students. • Keeps records of student attendance and grades according to University policy. • Develops and revises course contents, textbooks, instructional materials and teaching assignments or scheduling. • Participates in registration and the advisement process. • Provides students with academic advisement, including the development and monitoring of their degree plans and assistance in transferability as appropriate. • Assists students in career counseling and qualifying students for internships, graduate studies and similar work-related situations as needed. • Serves on departmental, divisional and University committees as needed to assist in policy development and other matters to benefit the University. • Pursues scholarly activities including soliciting and implementing teaching and research grants. • Administers and promotes the particular discipline majors internally and externally. • Participates in professional organizations to maintain professional skills. • Maintains appropriate office hours. • Participates in assessment activities for program effectiveness. • Participates personally and encourages student participation in University programs. • Contributes to and performs research. • Facilitates problem solving for students as required. • Supports the mission of the University and statement of vision. • May perform, with the dean’s approval, outside recruiting of faculty, staff, and most of all students. • Performs other duties assigned by the dean, the vice president for academic affairs, president, or designee(s) of the president.

Qualifications

A doctorate in the teaching discipline or evidence of completion of all course work at the doctoral level; i.e., ABD with completion of dissertation within six months is required. Must have a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the relevant teaching discipline. Three to five years of teaching experience and research in related field. Familiarity or experience with various teaching strategies is highly desirable. Experience with online instruction is also desirable. Must demonstrate active involvement in scholarly activities in addition to teaching; must be committed to teaching undergraduate students in an ethnically diverse environment and experienced in cutting-edge uses of information technology to advance learning; and assume a strong leadership role in developing courses and curricula.
