About the position West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently seeking a (Remote) Data Analyst to join the Department of Anesthesiology. This position is designed to assist investigators with their data consultation, retrieval, and management needs. The Data Analyst will be responsible for generating summaries, statistics, and reports using various query and report-writing tools, including Structured Query Language (SQL). The incumbent will develop data management standards, procedures, and documentation, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA. This role reports to the Principal Software Architect within the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) core of WVCTSI. In this role, the Data Analyst will provide customized data sets to WVCTSI investigators by extracting and reporting data from clinical databases such as Epic Clarity, Epic Caboodle, Common Data Model OMOP, and N3C Data Enclave. The analyst will independently handle large and complex research data requests, requiring a deep understanding of database structures and clinical variables. The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing urgent requests is essential. The Data Analyst will demonstrate expert proficiency in SQL programming, Spark SQL, and the use of Oracle SQL Developer and Microsoft SQL Server (SSMS). Knowledge of medical ontologies and classification systems (such as ICD10, CPT, LOINC, SNOMED) will be utilized to build and define clinical concepts that facilitate research. Regular meetings with Principal Investigators (PIs) and clinical teams will be necessary to provide updates on data pull requests and to discuss data action plans. Additionally, the Data Analyst will act as a mentor to new hires, providing education and support on data retrieval from clinical databases. The role involves identifying relationships and trends in data, developing data models, and designing data marts to simplify the reporting process. The analyst will also be responsible for maintaining the security and confidentiality of patient information and performing quality control audits to ensure data accuracy and completeness. Collaboration with system architects and software architects will be crucial to understand business requirements and implement effective data extraction procedures. Responsibilities • Provide customized data sets by extracting and reporting data from clinical databases such as Epic Clarity, Epic Caboodle, Common Data Model OMOP, and N3C Data Enclave. , • Independently handle large, complex research data requests requiring deep understanding of database structure and clinical variables. , • Simultaneously respond to and work on multiple projects while prioritizing urgent requests. , • Demonstrate expert proficiency in SQL programming, Spark SQL, Oracle SQL Developer, and Microsoft SQL Server (SSMS). , • Use knowledge of medical ontologies and classification systems to build and define clinical concepts for research. , • Regularly meet with PIs and clinical teams to advise, consult, and provide updates on data pull requests. , • Timely meet with nationwide data and clinical teams to discuss data action plans and monitor progress. , • Act as a mentor to new hire analyst roles, providing education and support on data retrieval. , • Identify relationships and trends in data and factors affecting research results. , • Develop data models for applications, metadata tables, views, or related database structures. , • Design and develop data marts for researchers to simplify the reporting process. , • Develop innovative solutions for researchers needing statistical assistance using SAS, R, or other statistical software. , • Develop data management standards, procedures, and documentation to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations. , • Maintain security and confidentiality of patient information. , • Perform quality control audits to ensure accuracy and completeness of clinical systems and data. , • Create supporting documentation, such as metadata and diagrams of entity relationships and business processes. , • Design and implement warehouse database structures in collaboration with software architects. , • Develop and implement data extraction procedures from other systems. Requirements • Master's degree in Health Informatics, Computer Science, or related field required. , • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in extensive data analysis and reporting role. , • Proficiency in Epic Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito, and Clinical Data Model required. , • Experience with N3C Data Enclave preferred. , • Familiarity with healthcare research preferred. , • Skilled at effective data collection and creating customized reports. , • Basic proficiency in programming languages (C, C++, Python). , • Effective time management skills at meeting deadlines. , • Skilled at using SQL and mathematics to solve problems. , • Skilled at identifying and verifying appropriate clinical source documentation for data reporting. , • Knowledge of regulatory aspects of protocol management. , • Strong analytical problem-solving skills. , • Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software problems. , • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals. , • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. , • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Nice-to-haves • Experience with statistical software such as SAS or R. , • Familiarity with healthcare regulatory environments and compliance standards.
