Role Overview – Senior Data Engineer (Remote)
We are seeking a seasoned Senior Data Engineer to join our rapidly expanding data team. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines that ingest, transform, and deliver high‑quality data to downstream analytics and machine‑learning workloads. You will work closely with data scientists, product managers, and business stakeholders across arenaflex to ensure that our data infrastructure scales efficiently, remains secure, and supports innovative health‑tech solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and develop end‑to‑end data pipelines that collect, cleanse, and normalize data from diverse sources, including internal applications, third‑party APIs, and IoT health devices.
- Design, implement, and maintain ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes using best‑in‑class tools and frameworks, ensuring reliability, performance, and compliance with data governance standards.
- Collaborate with the data science team to operationalize predictive models and analytics, embedding them into production‑grade data workflows.
- Lead the migration of legacy data assets to modern cloud‑based platforms (primarily Google Cloud Platform, with exposure to AWS and Azure).
- Build and optimize data storage solutions such as data lakes, warehouses, and marts using technologies like BigQuery, Snowflake, and Redshift.
- Develop reusable data engineering components in Python, SQL, and Scala, adhering to clean‑code principles and automated testing practices.
- Implement data quality frameworks, monitoring dashboards, and alerting mechanisms to proactively detect and resolve data anomalies.
- Partner with security and compliance teams to enforce data privacy regulations (HIPAA, GDPR) and ensure that all pipelines incorporate encryption, access controls, and audit trails.
- Stay current with emerging big‑data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Flink) and evaluate their applicability to arenaflex’s evolving data strategy.
- Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and champion a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands‑on experience designing, building, and operating large‑scale data pipelines in a production environment.
- Deep expertise in SQL for data modeling, query optimization, and complex analytical workloads.
- Proficiency in Python (or comparable language such as Java/Scala) for scripting, automation, and building data processing frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience with cloud platforms—preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP), but also AWS or Azure is acceptable.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into business‑focused language for cross‑functional partners.
- Excellent problem‑solving, critical‑thinking, and decision‑making abilities, especially when navigating ambiguous data requirements.
- Track record of delivering reliable, high‑throughput data solutions that meet strict SLAs and compliance mandates.
Preferred Qualifications & Nice‑to‑Have Skills
- Hands‑on experience with Hadoop ecosystem tools such as Hive, Pig, or PySpark.
- Familiarity with streaming technologies like Apache Kafka, Google Pub/Sub, or AWS Kinesis for real‑time data ingestion.
- Exposure to data visualization platforms (Looker, Tableau, Power BI) to support self‑service analytics.
- Background in the healthcare or health‑tech industry, understanding of clinical data standards (HL7, FHIR) is a plus.
- Experience implementing data cataloging and metadata management solutions (e.g., DataHub, Amundsen).
- Knowledge of containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes) for scalable pipeline deployment.
Core Skills & Competencies
- Data Modeling: Ability to design normalized and denormalized schemas that balance performance with storage efficiency.
- Performance Tuning: Expertise in query optimization, indexing strategies, and resource provisioning to minimize latency.
- Automation & CI/CD: Proficiency with Git, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar tools to automate testing, deployment, and monitoring.
- Security & Compliance: Understanding of encryption at rest and in transit, role‑based access control, and audit logging.
- Collaboration: Comfortable working in agile squads, participating in sprint planning, stand‑ups, and retrospectives.
- Documentation: Commitment to maintaining clear, up‑to‑date technical documentation and data dictionaries.
