Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. UC San Diego is a leading institution seeking a Research Administrator 2 to support its School of Biological Sciences. The role involves managing research awards and transactions related to contract and grant management, ensuring compliance with regulations, and providing financial support for post-award activities.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and/or oversees research awards and/or transactions related to contract and grant management and maintains contract and grant records in compliance with institutional and research sponsor policies
  • Monitors awards of moderate scope such as single investigator NSF proposals where analysis of financial information or reports requires review of a variety of factors (e.g. budgets, salaries, expenses, etc)
  • Receives assignments on project basis and fully analyzes problems, gathers data and information, and recommends solutions
  • Completes and approves transactions for signature by manager or other authorized institutional official
  • Provides moderate analytical and financial support in contract and grant administration, management of funds post-award, and closeout activities for federal, state, local and private sponsors
  • Involves activities associated with forecasting, planning, and managing of research portfolios by performing some or all of the following: administering and monitoring contract and grant awards, including compliance with regulations, terms and conditions; financial management and reporting from a variety of campus systems, including Kuali, UCPath, and Oracle Financial; and sub award/subcontract issuance and administration
  • Provides data gathering and analysis to the development of policies and procedures

Skills

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines
  • Ability to manage a high volume of transactions
  • Ability to perform moderately complex financial analysis and customized reporting
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports
  • Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization; communication skills; and a customer service focus
  • Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of OMB circulars such as Uniform Guidance, and principles of cost accounting standards, including allowability, allocability, and reasonableness, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with overlapping deadlines and short lead times and maintain a high level of attention to detail, and ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and follow through
  • Experience working with computer and information management systems. Strong computer skills in a PC environment using various business software programs (spreadsheets, word-processing, and databases) with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed
  • Knowledge of common sponsored award mechanisms and skills to gather and analyze resource data from various sources
  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility. Ability to work independently and/or in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including faculty, staff, students and the business community
  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills that facilitate professional, effective, and courteous interaction with a diverse population. Ability to maintain confidentiality as required
