Senior Communications Consultant
About Akoya We’re a woman-owned small business that delivers big results in strategic communications. For 25 years, Akoya has thrived in the government consulting landscape helping agencies launch new programs, leverage internal and external support, and drive their missions forward. Our strategic approach to communications increases the quality of services and makes Akoya a comfortable home for motivated communications professionals who value and rely on the idea-sharing and collaboration inherent in our corporate culture. Senior Communications Consultant Akoya is looking for a Senior Consultant to serve on Department of Energy engagements. You'll own day-to-day delivery on multiple concurrent assignments and serve as a primary point of contact for DOE clients. This is a hands-on role: you'll be writing, editing, and producing client deliverables yourself while also setting direction, reviewing colleagues’ work, and flagging risks before they reach the client. The right person is someone who can walk into ambiguity, pick a direction, and move — then course-correct as the picture sharpens. You won't always get clear instructions. You'll be expected to ask the right questions, make a call, and bring the team along.
What You'll Do
- Lead delivery on multiple concurrent DOE assignments, owning quality, timeline, and client communication for each
- Synthesize content from technical reports, policy documents, stakeholder interviews, and DOE source materials into clear, client-ready written deliverables
- Serve as the day-to-day client contact for assigned engagements: running status meetings, surfacing risks, contributing substantive ideas, and managing deliverable pipelines
- Build and refine the internal processes, checklists, templates, and team structures Akoya uses to deliver DOE work — and ensure those processes meet DOE's documentation and procedural requirements
- Proactively flag disconnects, scope creep, deadline risks, and team capacity issues to Akoya leadership and the client
Requirements
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and at least 10 years of experience. Alternatively, must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field and 7 years of experience.
- U.S. citizenship is required with verbal and written fluency in English
- Must be able to receive and maintain a federal security clearance (public trust level)
- 7+ years of professional consulting, federal contracting, or equivalent experience, with at least 3 years supporting federal clients (DOE strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated experience leading multi-workstream engagements as the primary client point of contact
- Strong writing skills with a track record of producing client-ready deliverables from ambiguous or incomplete source material
- Demonstrated ability to develop new processes, tools, and team structures rather than just executing existing ones
- Advanced Microsoft Word proficiency: styles, templates, complex formatting, cross-references, tracked changes, document comparison
- Must have strong organizational and project management skills
Base Compensation
- Base compensation: $130,000 to $140,000. Actual compensation is subject to variation due to factors such as location, education, years of experience, and candidate skillset.
Employee Benefits Akoya provides generous benefits for its full-time employees including:
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k)
- Eleven federal holidays
- Vacation and sick & personal time
- And more!
