Electrical Engineer -- Semiconductor System Manufacturing
Electrical Engineer, Tool Manufacturing Job Description | FemtoMetrix, Inc. | Los Angeles, CA Hands-on Electrical Engineer wanted to own the manufacturing build of advanced semiconductor metrology systems at our Los Angeles HQ. Full-time, on-site. We're hiring an Electrical Engineer, Tool Manufacturing to become the primary day-to-day electrical engineering resource on our flagship metrology systems. You'll execute the electrical build, integration, and qualification of complex capital equipment from kickoff through factory acceptance and field installation, working in close technical partnership with our VP of Electrical Engineering and VP of Engineering. You'll work alongside a small senior engineering team — mechanical, optical, controls/software, and systems — and have the opportunity to grow into senior technical ownership as the company scales. FemtoMetrix builds advanced semiconductor metrology systems for leading chip manufacturers. We're a small, well-funded engineering company headquartered in Los Angeles, with strategic backing from Samsung Ventures, SK hynix, and NASA/JPL. The work is real, the team is senior, and your impact is visible — fewer layers, faster decisions, and direct access to leadership and customers. We expect a realistic ramp — meaningful contribution within 30 to 60 days, ownership within 3 to 5 months.
Key Responsibilities
Our flagship Harmonic-series tools combine precision laser optics, multi-axis motion control, controls electronics, and SECS/GEM-compliant fab interfaces. In this role, you will:
- Execute the electrical build, assembly, integration, and qualification of FemtoMetrix metrology systems — from initial build through factory test, shipment, and field installation
- Lead hands-on manufacturing activities including system wiring, electrical integration, controls bring-up, and debug
- Troubleshoot and resolve electrical, controls, and system-level issues during build, qualification, and field installation
- Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable assemblies, work instructions, ECOs, and build records using Altium, SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent EDA tools
- Drive design improvements for manufacturability, reliability, serviceability, and repeatability
- Partner with the senior R&D Electrical Engineer on technology transfer from development to manufacturing, providing manufacturing-readiness feedback on new designs
- Collaborate with mechanical, optical, software, and systems teams, and coordinate with suppliers and contract manufacturers on electrical components and assemblies
- Ensure compliance with SEMI, CE, UL, IEC, and other applicable safety and regulatory requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or closely related discipline)
- 5+ years of hands-on electrical work on complex capital equipment or scientific instrumentation — building, integrating, and bringing up real systems. This role is hands-on by design. Candidates without direct build, integration, and bring-up experience are unlikely to be a fit.
- Demonstrated ownership of electrical subsystems for complex capital equipment from build through customer acceptance
- Schematic capture and electrical design proficiency in Altium Designer, SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent EDA tools (Altium experience a plus — our VP of Engineering uses Altium)
- Strong fundamentals in power distribution, controls, sensors, motion systems, and low-voltage signal integrity, with hands-on proficiency in test and measurement equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power analyzers) for board-, harness-, and system-level diagnosis
- Strong understanding of personal and machine safety principles, proven records of safety implementation, ability to be responsible for personal and team safety working with power circuitry, lasers, very high voltage, and moving machinery. Ability to generate safety documents and instructions for the junior engineers and technicians.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience at a semiconductor capital equipment company — Applied Materials, KLA, ASML, Lam Research, Onto Innovation, Bruker, Nanometrics, or similar
- Direct experience with inspection, metrology, lithography, etch, deposition, or CMP tools
- Familiarity with fab operations, SEMI standards (S2, S8), tool installation requirements, and customer acceptance processes
