[Hiring] Statistician @Office of Suicide Prevention, Veterans Crisis Line
Role Description The employee will serve as a Statistician, located in the Data and Information Department, Veterans Crisis Line (VCL), Veterans Affairs (VA). The VCL is a 24-hour, 7-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year service aimed at connecting callers worldwide to a caring, qualified Veterans Administration employee. The VCL's mission is to provide 24/7, world-class suicide prevention and crisis intervention services to Veterans, Service Members and their family members.
- Responsibilities
- Evaluates data resulting from the application of statistical tools, models, methods, and techniques.
- Uses statistical techniques at a comprehensive professional level to solve problems and draw rational inferences.
- Uses statistical programs and structured query language (SQL) programming to construct and manage datasets and databases.
- Assists the VCL Data Management Team with the day to day operational functions of VCL Business Information.
- Serves as a liaison between VCL, VA and Non-VA stakeholders.
- Assists in the development and implementation of automated reports.
- Provides accurate and complete analytical results using tabular or graphic representation as well as narrative description to leadership, internal and external stakeholders.
- Contributes to the development of programming and documentation templates for analyzing VA data.
- Conducts univariate and multivariate statistical data analyses in consultation with Director and/or project leads.
- Interprets the data on the basis of statistical significance.
- Provides leadership strategic direction based on data collected.
- Work Schedule
- Tour of Duty is typically Administrative Hours. Tour is subject to change based on program needs.
- Compressed/Flexible Work Schedule may be authorized upon supervisor approval after training per Agency policy.
- This is a remote position. Selectees will work 100% of the time in a non-VA-owned space outside of the local commuting area of a parent station.
- The employee's workspace must be suitable for conducting business and as such, remote employees are expected to provide a secure, distraction-free home-based worksite with reliable high speed internet connectivity.
- The employee will be required to travel to the closest VA Medical Center or VA Outpatient Clinic for issuance of equipment, and as needed for technical support.
- Selectees will be required to self-certify that their remote workplace meets all safety, privacy, and internet speed requirements.
- Qualifications
- Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS (IOR): An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for entry into this job series, and it is something that may not be waived.
- To qualify for the GS-1530 occupational series, applicants MUST possess one of the following:
- Degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.
- Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
- GS-12 Specialized Experience Requirement: In addition to meeting the above IOR, applicants must also meet the following experience:
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
- Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to:
- Applies Statistical models and techniques to evaluate and build datasets.
- Uses statistical methods to solve problems and draw inferences.
- Develops and formats data sets to work with other models by using primary and foreign keys.
- Constructs and manages datasets and databases using SQL, Python and statistical programs.
- Applies statistical methodologies to support analytical work.
