HR Generalist Consultant
HR Generalist Consultant Part-Time · ~10 hrs/week · W2 · $40/hr · Remote (Fort Collins, CO strongly preferred; US-based) ABOUT CONSULTING BY THE CAMPFIRE Consulting by the Campfire is a fractional HR and people ops consultancy for small businesses and startups across the US. Founded by Amy J Hamilton, we partner with leaders to build durable HR systems, compliant policies, and people operations that actually scale — not just check a box. We're adventure-ready and unapologetically practical. We use AI tools to work smarter and move faster. This role is how we scale that work. THE ROLE This is an execution, project-based role. You'll work directly with the founder — there's no team infrastructure to lean on. Your work goes directly into client deliverables and business operations, which means it is valuable and has to be good. The right person for this role is someone who gets energized by building from scratch, thinks in systems and processes, and can take a clear brief and return something usable without hand-holding. Client-facing coverage is on the horizon as trust builds — but day one is about execution. WHAT YOU'LL DO – Research HR topics independently and return clear, actionable summaries — employment law, state compliance, policy best practices, compensation and benefits benchmarking – Draft and refine HR policies, employee handbook content, and compliance guidance for small US-based employers — building from scratch, not from templates – Support client payroll administration — build automations, surface useful data, and create repeatable processes where none exist – Assist with employee lifecycle projects: performance review frameworks, benefits open enrollment resources, onboarding workflows – Use AI tools (Gemini and others) as a standard part of your workflow — we expect it and embrace it – Support candidate screening: manage applicant lists, conduct 20-minute phone screens, return qualified shortlists for hiring manager review WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR – 3–5 years of HR generalist experience with real breadth — you've owned multiple functional areas, not observed them – Solid working knowledge of US employment law and HR compliance; you can research a gap and come back with a defensible answer – Comfortable drafting policies and guidance documents independently — you've done it before without a corporate legal team handing you a template – Process-oriented and analytical — you look for efficiencies, document what you build, and think about how something scales before you build it – Strong written communication — your work goes directly to clients – Self-directed with high follow-through; you manage your own time, flag blockers early, and deliver what you said you would – Comfortable in ambiguity and early-stage environments — this is a growing consultancy, not a corporation with established playbooks – HR certification (PHR or equivalent) a plus, not required OUR VALUES Our values are our compass — they guide every decision, every client engagement, and how we show up for the people we work with: ✔ Leave it better than you found it ✔ Smart, with people and process ✔ Be curious, bold, adventurous ✔ Fun through excellence HOURS & STRUCTURE This role is approximately 10 hours per week with natural flex — some weeks lighter, some heavier depending on active projects. As the client base grows, hours can grow with it. We'll be upfront about workload so you can plan your week. You'll be brought on as a W2 employee. This is intentional — we want to invest in training, maintain brand consistency, and build a real working relationship, not a transactional one.
