Description: The Humanities Department at Columbia College is seeking applications for a full-time position in Spanish Language and Cultures at the Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Instructor (non-tenure track) rank for the Fall 2024 semester (9-month contract). Teaching, professional development, and service are all required aspects of the position. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching in-seat classes in elementary Spanish language, as well as more advanced language, literature, and culture courses in the newly established Spanish Language and Cultures B.A. program offered online by the College. Typically, faculty members teach 24 credit hours or the equivalent per academic year. Columbia College is known for its small class sizes, which enrich teaching and mentoring experiences. Funding for conference attendance and other professional development activities is provided on an annual basis. We highly value strong interpersonal skills, cultural humility, and a demonstrated ability to make positive contributions to the College community. Faculty also hold important service roles at Columbia College--in admission and recruiting events, academic advising, curriculum development, academic assessment, and collaboration across instructional venues. They participate in the Faculty Association and its committees, and support co-curricular activities, and College events (may require occasional afternoon, evening and/or weekend commitments). The salary offered is competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Qualifications: A PhD in Spanish language and/or Spanish/Latin American literatures at time of appointment would qualify the candidate for a tenure-track position, rank based on experience. A Master's degree in Spanish or a related field is required if the candidate does not possess the PhD as indicated above. A PhD is preferred. Native or near native fluency in Spanish is expected together with an excellent command of English. The ideal candidate will possess experience demonstrating effective student-centered teaching strategies which enhance the success of diverse learners in multiple learning environments, and show potential for quality curriculum development. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience at the collegiate level.
