The Academic Year Tutor is directly responsible to the Upward Bound and Open Doors Academic Advisors and is a part-time, temporary employee. Tutors are paid on an hourly basis to provide academic assistance to middle and high school-age participants to help them develop the academic and motivational skills needed to become self-confident and independent learners. Tutors play key roles in the entire process, and their competency, reliability and integrity are essential to the success of both programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Tutors must be available to work Monday through Thursday evenings from 4pm-7 pm all days Lawton Public Schools are in session and on designated Saturdays from 9am-1pm.
Education:
- Demonstrated success in a post-secondary educational institution
- Academic expertise in the subject of Math, Science, English or other high school core curriculum
- Experience with and knowledge of high school students
- Excellent oral communication skills
- Ability to accurately complete tutoring and timesheet records
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with students, parents, and program staff
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Tutor and assist students in academic subject areas.
- Establish rapport with students assigned as tutees.
- Arrive at all tutoring sessions promptly, prepared and appropriately dressed.
- Report to, and keep UB and OD supervisors advised of both the perceived and real needs of students.
- Identify student's problem areas and confer with program staff.
- Attend all scheduled meetings, training sessions and individual meetings with the program staff.
- Abstain from use of alcohol/tobacco products while on duty or around students.
- Leave absences must be approved in advance by program staff.
- Term of employment will be yearly with satisfactory evaluation.
- Prepare time sheets.
- Report any signs or indications of abuse to the program staff.
- Prior experience with, or participation in, TRiO programs
- Preference is given to those who have succeeded in overcoming a disadvantaged background similar to program participants
