Job Overview

The Department of Biology at East Carolina University seeks to fill a fixed-term faculty position at the Teaching Assistant Professor level with expertise in field botany, ecology, and evolution, and evidence-based teaching practices. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory and upper-level courses in biology, including Principles of Biology II and field botany, and participate in Departmental, College, and University activities. This position begins in August 2024, with the possibility of subsequent renewal and advancement in title.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach Principles of Biology II (BIOL 1200) in an active-learning format, focusing on ecology, evolution, behavior, and diversity
  • Offer upper-level electives in field botany and plant biology, including a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) in plant ecology
  • Participate in Departmental, College, and University activities, including curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate students, providing guidance on academic and career goals
  • Collaborate with colleagues in biology and other disciplines to develop and implement innovative teaching methods and research projects
  • Contribute to the development of a respectful, welcoming, and inclusive academic community, fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Essential Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field (including but not limited to Botany, Ecology, or Evolution)
  • At least one year of experience with field research and plant identification
  • Strong teaching philosophy and experience, with a focus on creating an inclusive and engaging learning environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with evidence-based teaching practices and active-learning methods
  • Background in plant ecology, evolution, or a related field, with a strong understanding of field research methods and plant identification techniques
  • Familiarity with curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes
  • Experience with mentoring and advising undergraduate students, particularly those from underrepresented groups
