Job Overview

We're seeking experienced Distributed Systems Engineers (L4) to join our Data Platform team. As a remote-friendly team, we value what you can do, regardless of your location in the U.S. This is a full-time opportunity with a competitive salary of $26/hour. You'll play a crucial role in designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems that enable Netflix's microservices to efficiently store, consume, and manage data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain large-scale distributed systems that meet the evolving data needs of Netflix microservices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, and TPMs, to drive initiatives and solve complex problems.
  • Contribute to the open-source community and add to Netflix's OSS (Open Source Software) projects.
  • Ensure the scalability, reliability, and performance of distributed systems, with a focus on sub-millisecond latencies.
  • Work on building and operating adaptable query doors, data processing, and handling systems.
  • Participate in code reviews, ensuring high-quality code and promoting a culture of feedback and engineering excellence.

Focus Areas within the Data Platform Team

Database Access Platform

The Database Access Platform group builds and operates a flexible query door that works with data abstractions to achieve sub-millisecond latencies. This team is responsible for enabling Netflix microservices to fulfill their growing and evolving data needs.

Data Platform Infrastructure

The Data Platform Infrastructure group serves as a platform for our own data platforms. They create high-impact systems, controls, and deployment frameworks tailored to running data systems at scale.

Data Development and Processing

This team offers a self-service, cleared-way product to empower varied client personas across Netflix to meet their low-latency Data Development and Processing needs.

Big Data Compute

The Big Data Compute team provides the cloud-native platform for distributed data processing at Netflix. They're responsible for helping with Flash, ETL data into petabytes-scale data warehouses, and accessing that data using Flash and Voila/TrinoDB.

Big Data Orchestration

This team offers the platform for scheduling, organizing, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner.

Requirements and Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems or applications.
  • Proficiency in designing and developing RESTful web services.
  • Experience with building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems.
  • Knowledge of Java or other object-oriented programming languages.
  • Comfort with multi-threading and solving related challenges.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with distributed data systems, such as Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native technologies and containerization (e.g., Docker).
  • Knowledge of Python and its ecosystem.
  • Experience contributing to open-source projects.
